sorry for the delay .. I was "up" there when you wrote me, but I am now "down" here. I was busy with preparation for a job interview in Princeton ... LOVELY city!
So, about the stuff up there: well Canadian politics have turned exciting again!
Harper, who is a neocon of the worst kind, who has recently spent 300,000,000 of my tax dollars to win a majority; and hasn't; began ACTING in the parliament as if he WAS the prime minister of a majority party ... so the other three parties: Liberals (centrist), NDP (leftis) and Block Quebecois (Frensh nationalist, left leaning, but stemming from Conservatives, traditionally) decided to form a coalition. This was a perfectly legal and viable option, although never exercised in Canada before ...
But, Harper, the neocon, prorogued the Parliament ...
He first provoked the other parties by: 1) pledging to cut party funding (in canada each party gets one dollar per number of votes cast in their favor) 2) pledging to disallow civil servat's strike rights and 3) refusing to offer a stimulus package for the recession economy), then put those proposal forward pending on a vote of confidence, which the opposition decided to not support and instead of having another election, form a coalition! Then, Harper, the coward neocon had prorogued the parliament; i.e. asked the governor general to halt the parliament, i.e. closing the doors of government to 'people's' representatives ...
Nevertheless, the bastard who he is, KNOWING that he doesn't have the confidence of the house of "commons", he is still going ahead with his senate appointments!!!!
Now, the problem that he official opposition, the liberal party was facing was its leader: a brilliant university professor by the name of Stephan Dion, a man of great integrity but poor charisma! So the liberals were scrambling amongst themselves to kick Dion out (and harper was trying to cash on this division, before he was surprised by the coalition) and get a more charismatic leader in place. The choice finally became limited to two candidates: Another University professor, with dubiously (neo)conservative attitude by the name of Michael Ignatieff; and Ontario's NDP (i.e socialist) ex-Premier, Bob Rae ...
Without consulting the members, the "file and rank" of the libearl party put ignatieff in place; who is very eloquent, but not a man of people!
So ... that's what all the woohoo is about!
The businesses started getting a bit flaky during those volatile days, but I have been away and I don't know how the markets are reacting to Ignatieff ... and anyways, I am gonna swim to the other side of the pond, or slide down the border to Princeton :) Canada and its ice and take a break from me for a few years! :))
It was hard to tell the truth in Rome and dine on eggs of plover. I've made a few omelets, but as old Rome was once Adored by Hordes, America is now. Welcome, friends!
